The superpowers of muscle recovery

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Optimise your muscle recovery through nutrition

Who has never experienced this moment? Proud of having done our leg/buttock session, we wake up the next day with aches and pains! It is impossible to walk without pain for several days, even sitting down becomes an ordeal. All of us would have liked to know that drinking pomegranate juice helps muscle recovery! [1]

Recover faster from intense sessions with pomegranate

Muscle recovery is an essential part of any physical training programme, as it allows the muscles to recover and repair after intense exercise. While many athletes focus on protein and carbohydrate intake to aid muscle recovery, there is another drink that may be helpful: organic pomegranate juice.

Organic pomegranate juice contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy drink for the body. But what makes organic pomegranate juice particularly interesting for muscle recovery is the ellagic acid it contains. Ellagic acid is a natural antioxidant that has been shown to have beneficial effects on muscle recovery. [2]

Pomegranate, a muscle-builder's bomb

A study conducted by the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) in Belgium demonstrated the impact of pomegranate on muscle recovery. Pomegranates contain polyphenols and in particular ellagic acid, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Since ellagic acid cannot be absorbed by our body, it is metabolised into urolithin (A, B, C or D) which is absorbed and enters the bloodstream. Researchers have proven that urolithin B has a protective effect on the muscles. In addition, they were able to demonstrate that the active ingredients in pomegranate are natural "anabolic", i.e. they naturally increase the growth of muscle cells and have an impact on the recovery of muscles or muscle fibres. [2]

In addition, a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that drinking pomegranate juice before and after strenuous exercise can help reduce muscle soreness and loss of muscle strength. Participants were subjected to an intense squat exercise and then given pomegranate juice or a placebo. Those who consumed pomegranate juice showed a significant reduction in muscle soreness and faster recovery of muscle strength. [1]

An American study also demonstrated the effects of pomegranate on muscle recovery. Researchers in Texas studied the impact of pomegranate juice on muscle recovery after physical exertion. Non-athletic subjects were asked to ingest 500 ml of pomegranate juice for 5 days and then perform an intense biceps exercise known to cause fatigue and muscle soreness (soreness). The researchers observed the subjects' strength fluctuation at the end of the session, as well as the following days. Under placebo, it was found that the muscle strength at the end of the session was reduced by 30%, and then returned to its usual value on the following days. In the pomegranate juice subjects, the researchers observed the same decrease in muscle strength immediately after the session, but the recovery was faster than in the placebo subjects [3]. This proves one of the many benefits of pomegranate: its impact on muscle recovery.
